I know that probably such topic was talked over several times, but not finished like it should be. I remember when i bought my first gothic metal band album... Theatre of Tragedy "Theatre of Tragedy"... I was really shocked when i heard the mayestic sounds that You Thaetre if Tragedy made... It was so melancholic, so calm, so beautiful that I could never imagine such a wonderful experience in music world... Next was "Velvet Darkness..." and again the same marvelous gothic sound... Thou had made something diffrent, brand new branch in history of music, something that thousands of souls listened to for first time... You were the best and most original group. That was a real succes! Next were "A rose.." and it was very good, but it was only a ep... And finally "Aegis"... A total masterpiece, that can't be compered to anything else in the world of music. Those old-english lyrics, Livs' (' in right place You're such a wonderful person that it must me like Shakespeares') and Raymonds' voices were such composed with the melancholic keyboard sound and those superb gituars... The best album that i had listed to in my whole life, and the best band... Next were "Musique" and "Assembly", and I had been hit by a thunder...A total shit with mushrooms! What is this? Nothing of wonderful vocals neither female nor male... Gitauars? What? You call this gituars? Where are they? And texts like "Honey, honey"? With Britney's voice? Complete disastour! Stop this fuckin' comersion! Start doing what you have done in the begining! You were the best gothic metal band and now you are the worst electro shit band!

Meh... You're right to a point. If ToT had Eastwest/Nuclear Blast backing them up in a big way for Musique and Assembly, that would be closer to "selling out" than the direction they're taking now.

Basically to me it's as if ToT went back to Square 1 and said: "We're set for life if we keep writing albums like Aegis. What's the point? Where's the excitement of all that?" End result: Musique. For a band of one genre to completely evolve into another genre with very little hint of its former self and write an album as good as Musique is a rare thing, very hard to accomplish.

Assembly is a further improvement, I think the band sounds tighter and more focused in this genre than ever... If the next album is another improvement on what we have now, I think in a couple years you'll be eating your words.

In short, you're entitled to your opinion but I don't care much for it. Aegis will always rank among the top 5 albums I have ever heard, but the music ToT are making now is definitely not "commercialism taking its toll on a good band". But hey, if you don't like it, find somewhere else to yell and kick and scream about it, because we've heard your opinion a million times before.
...And the comfortable summer breeze
Played with the green leaves of the hazel trees,
Reminding them of how young and beautiful they are...

What I find funny is that people tend to look at a band like this and say "You sold out you sonsabitches!" But really, wouldn't real selling out be selling out to your current fans, because you KNOW it'll make you good money, even if it's not what you want to do? I mean, there's no question there are a lot of heartless bands out there that DO "sell out" for the money. It sickens me. Theatre of Tragedy did not sell out. They made an album. YOU chose not to like it. Move on.

What I think would be interesting to know is...what exactly would you like to see from ToT Soul of Tragedy? What would a new album of theirs sound like at its best in YOUR opinion? Always interesting to get different perspectives on such things.

Look at such bands as Cradle of Filth! Even if they went on commersion they made wonderful music without any electro sounds! They every album is something diffrent, they go further and further! And this way they made 7 superb albums with "Cruelty..", "Dusk..., "Midian" as masterpieces... What can i tell about ToT? three wonderful albmus, and then total changing into moneymaking band... Now they are just like Backstreet Boys and more of this shit... Music without soul.
I just wanted to hear from them this Gothic Sound...
But what have we here? Raymond who is listening to eminem, dr. dre and some techno bands! He is responible for mixing everything! For all that miserible sounds. The second band member who plays on synthesizer is usesless. The same goes for two band members that play gituars... And drums? Where are drums? Raymond! Start doing all music all by yourself!
Your not any more Theatre of Tragedy, you're the cheap Theatre of Technology and Commercy.
And I'll be loughing when one day on viva you will be on second place next to Britney who will be first... You will be loved by all those technomaniacs with dicoes, sex, and fuckin' new world in mind, and you will be worse than Britney! But this is your band, and do whatever you want with it. I will always love music you made at begining, and for this that you made something diffrent than all the bands in the world. It's a pity that now you're doing music that is made by thousands of bands...
When I'll use Name Theatre of Tragedy I'll mean your first three albums, and only for these three you will be in my remembrance.
Thank God, that there are such bands as The Sins of Thy Beloved, Tristania, Siebenburgen, After Forever, Within Temptation...
See Ya' techno fan's!
Look at such bands as Cradle of Filth! Even if they went on commersion they made wonderful music without any electro sounds!

That's your personal opinion.
For me they just stick to their style and it became quite boring after "Dusk...".
And electro sound != commercial...

QUOTE

Bad example...
As I said, you're personal opinion.
I think they are a pretty good example for a band doing the music for the sake of money.
And I can assure you CoF sell much more albums than ToT and they make MUCH more money!

QUOTE

What can i tell about ToT? three wonderful albmus, and then total changing into moneymaking band...

This seems to be quite a tragic curse...
So ToT use more electronics now and the music is much more catchy. But why are people like you always that quick with saying "moneymaking band".
As I said bands like CoF or Dimmu Borgir make much more money. And Dimmu Borgir are probably laughing their asses off how every little kid around buys their albums just because they think it's evil...
Do you know what music the members of CoF or Dimmu Borgir like these days? They also get older and are probably sick of just listening to one kind of music all the time. But probably they would still continue to make their commercial black metal as they can make the most money with that.
So who's commercial, who's dishonest and who's into money-making here?
I can't even blame someone for trying to make money with music.
Kids that live from the money of their parents are always quick with attacking "money-making" bands.
It's easy to say that bands should make music just for the sake of music and they shouldn't earn money with it as they are commercial assholes then.
Probably I should also develop software just because it's so cool and I love it so much and I should never receive any money for it.
I can assure you that I think programming is interesting... probably I wouldn't do it otherwise. But I probably wouldn't do it if I wouldn't earn money with it.
This is how it works... we have to work to make money to get along in life... as fucking ugly this may be.

QUOTE

Now they are just like Backstreet Boys and more of this shit... Music without soul.

Since you're an expert with electronic music, I think it's really important to hear these words from you...

QUOTE

But what have we here? Raymond who is listening to eminem, dr. dre and some techno bands!

Come on... let him listen to whatever bands he likes. He's at least honest and doesn't says he listens to a bunch of metal bands just to please the fans.

QUOTE

He is responible for mixing everything! For all that miserible sounds.

So you have been with them during the recording of the last two albums?
Seems you're quite an insider...
I can assure you that every band member is responsible for the result.
Everyone is free to move along if he/she wouldn't like the music.

QUOTE

The second band member who plays on synthesizer is usesless.

Since you don't like electronic music at all I don't think you're the one to judge that.

QUOTE

technomaniacs with dicoes, sex, and fuckin' new world in mind, and you will be worse than Britney!
If you say that...

QUOTE

Thank God, that there are such bands as The Sins of Thy Beloved, Tristania, Siebenburgen, After Forever, Within Temptation...

So there's still a lot of music for you around. Why are you complaining then?
Btw, most of the bands you mentioned would probably not even exist without ToT.

I personally hate the hell out of rap but you know, I'm not Raymond, so to assume I know what's going on in his head would be quite pretentious. People are all different, and holding someone to YOUR standards is just stupid. You're one of 7 billion folk on this planet. Just live your life, if you decide you don't like something, no one forces you to listen. Don't impose your ideas on another person or call them useless for YOU not liking them, espesially when there are thousands of other people that DO like it.
Just assuming Raymond was holding a gun to the head of the other band members and was saying "WE WILL DO A RAP ALBUM. HA-HA. DO NOT TRY AND OPPOSE ME." (god forbid. please don't) I would at least try to give the album a fair listen, and if (when...) it didn't work, I would most likely just not dwell on it and be happy I have other good music.
